What is minimalism in interior design?
We talked about the minimalism in fashion in one of the previous blog post, but what does it mean in interior design? First of all, minimalist interiors while maximizing the space is a mindset that celebrates the beauty of simplicity and focuses on intentional living! Minimalism in interiors means creating essential space with no clutter, a space with clarity and tranquility.
1.Start with furniture!
Select furniture with legs!
Using furniture that has legs makes the space look more airy and open, it is also part of the Feng Shui! It allows the air to circulate, it is certainly accessible for cleaning and really, you can pick up from the floor when you drop something like a hair band! Tip: there are decorative legs you can put on your furniture!
flow
Place the furniture so there is enough space to walk from one area to another. For example, if your space is small, you might better opt out for 2 small couches across each other then one sectional that can look cluttered. when selecting chairs, look for more simplicity such as long legs, less cushion and possibly no arms. Visually, it occupies less space. Tip: use ottomans instead of tables, you can add a tray on it to replace the table function, but they can be used as a hidden storage as well!
2.Embrace the light
Set the furniture so it doesn’t block the natural light.
Keep it away from the windows as you want to maximize your light. Get sheer curtains or blind that allow sunlight to get through.
use more mirrors as they reflect the light in your space.
They can be decorative and purposeful.
Use lighter colors.
Whites, cream, beige, but also some pastel colors can make the space look bigger and lighter.
3.Storage and organization:
wall storage
Use your imagination to create space on the wall. Storage can be created in the build in cabinets or shelves. You can create a feature wall with shelves that have bins as for non clutter storage. Use open shelves for few decor pieces as well.
UNDER BED STORAGE
Your bed can be used as a storage unit with drawers that can bee pulled out of storage begs made for under the bed.
Think vertical
Use wall to create space. Add lighting on the wall instead of floor lamps. Need more shelves?Add a board on the wall that can be used for some of your stuff, board by the window will still allow light to come in while creating more space. Add tiles or wall paper where it’s a tiny space as it makes the eyes look up so it creates bigger space and looks decorative.
TV Placing
Mount your tv on the wall. I know, boring, right? Well not so much, there are ways to cover your TV with an art piece so when it’s not used, just cover it!
Decor
Less is more! For the pictures, use big canvases as they grab your attention and makes your home look better. Having one big picture instead of wall full of small pictures makes it more elevated, simple and clean. Be mindful when selecting the amount of decor, minimalism focuses on decluttering the space. Bring natural elements and neutral colors. Plants are always welcome, they make your space look more fresh bringing the green in.Tip: use floating picture frames with storage.
Stop trying and focus on doing, make your space count and focus on what you want to have more of: fun, freedom and clever solutions. Make a decision where everything in your space has a purpose and makes your life better and easier.
Namaste!
