You know that moment when you just want to change something in your apartment that will be relatively quick and easy? If you are thinking of a laundry room, this is it! This is how I did my laundry room makeover DIY:
I did that work, DIY laundry room on a small budget! The place I live in is a rental, given that I didn’t want to spend tons of money on it. So, I made it my small laundry room makeover DIY.
I had that idea that I can just paint the wall, take off some old shelves and screws from the wall, get few baskets and that’s it, my laundry room is like new. Well at least that sounds easier said then done. YOU CAN LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES!
Here we go!
BEFORE
My laundry room looked just like one of many others. It wasn’t organized, shelves were too old and frankly some were not functional. I felt like I had to clean up the mess and refresh it. This is before the laundry room makeover.
DURING THE LAUNDRY MAKEOVER
Here is the list of what I needed for my little project of the laundry room layover DIY:
- Paint
- Painting kit
- Scotch tape
- Plastic surface protector
- Sponge (if you decide to do what I did)
- Tape measure
- Drywall filler
Paint
For the main color of my laundry room makeover DIY, I chose white – Royal Satin White. It is just basic and classic, one gallon was enough for my space that was 8×7 laundry room. I decided to add a little bit of fun color and make some pattern with it. I decided to go for a beautiful green, I love green and it is such a refreshing color. The one I selected is Avon Green. I used only small sampler jar as that was plenty for my one wall – 8’x8′.
Screw anchors
This is in case you have those screw anchors in the wall like I had. Watch the video on how to take screw anchors off. Use the drywall filler once finished taking off the screw anchors. Fill up the hole with the filler material, let it dry and sand it before applying the white paint. TIP: Wait for about 6h for the patch paint to dry.
Painting
When doing laundry room makeover diy, be careful how you do the details as that is where we loose. Use the bigger roller for the biggest surfaces and apply few times pressing evenly onto the surface. You might have to do the second layer after it’s dry. For my paint it takes up to 24h to dry fully. The smaller roller you got from the paint kit is good for areas around outlets or if you have shelves like I did. Brush is for the corners. TIP: Make sure you use the brush for the corners and then apply the smaller roller around the corners so it blends nicely with the brush stroke.
Pattern
When doing laundry room makeover DIY, you can use many different patterns. I decided to use sponge style and kind of herringbone look. I cut the sponge into two parts as I wanted it to look skinnier. Pour the paint into a bowl or plate as I did and tap the one side of the sponge. Make sure you don’t have too much color on it so it’s not dripping. Try it first out on the paper before applying onto the wall.
The way to do it is measure the wall length and split it into as many parts as you want. Honestly I first put one tape line and did the herringbone style around it. Once done with that one, just measure how much is the space from one side and that is the distance between your second tape line.
As it’s a thin later of the paint, it will dry faster. Mine was fully dry after 4h. Once ready, take the tape off slowly. If you see that the paint isn’t dry, the base layer or the pattern, leave it on for few more hours.
AFTER LAUNDRY ROOM MAKEOVER
The project takes all the little details into account. In the finish line I had to get the baskets I bought at Big Lots that are all the same, plate for the dryer plugin section and floating shelf.
There are so many different ideas for baskets and how to use them but mine is simple and it serves the purpose. I put all the clothes, books, everything that was standing there before into those baskets.
If you want to know how to install a floating shelf, see the video here. Mine is very decorative and can’t keep anything heavy on it. That is why have only few decorative items on it.
Overall I am very satisfied with how it all looks. it is so much more organized, clean and updated. It took me about 2 days to finish it up with all the breaks. I had to wait for the paint to dry. I spent about $150 on the makeover and reused old shelves by taking down one that was broken.
Hope this was helpful to you if you have laundry room project on your own.
Namaste,
Jana
