First, let’s clarify what a minimalistic wardrobe actually is. Minimalistic wardrobe is standing for awareness of our clothing and their purpose. It contains basic, versatile, mix and match pieces of clothing that create different outfits. Minimalistic wardrobe allows you to focus on the experiences around you while spending less time, space and energy deciding what to wear.
Imagine having only 30 pieces and creating so many beautiful, simplistic outfits with it. It’s not hard, it doesn’t take much time and it is a lot of fun! So how to create a minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style?
Steps to building minimalistic wardrobe:
Are you ready? Let’s create a minimalistic wardrobe with our sacrificing your style!
I love fashion, dresses and light colors, meet me here!
1.first pick what you haven’t worn in 6 months or more!
Be honest with yourself and take care of the clothes you haven’t used in such a long time. Someone else might use it better. Creating a minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style does mean you have to sacrifice what you don’t wear! Donations are always a great way to clean up your closet. Besides donating or selling unused, I like to ask my friends if they would like to have it, a lot of times I give them something they would actually wear and it’s a win – win story. Few times they came back to me, offering few pieces from their closet they didn’t use in a while. That is how I got my hair steamer, yay!
If you decide to sell old garments, choose online selling like: Postmark, Facebook Marketplace or Mercari.
2.What are the basic items?
When creating minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style, choose your favorites. It would be good if you start with pair of good pants that are soft and classic, universal item to be worn for work, going out out or casual walk. Next: jeans, you probably know by now which jeans make you feel comfortable and are good even after you’ve eaten a little more then usually. It is allowed to have couple pieces of pants and jeans!
Shirts: cotton, silk or poplin. They can be different colors but make sure you have few whites and blacks as they go well with everything. I like to have greens and pink in my closet, it’s just a nice pop of color when it comes to spring/summer time. Blouses are nice touch when it comes to business casual or even going out with jewelry to dress it up.
Dresses: Little black dress, a must, white dress for summer, pencil dress, midi dress. Add skirts.
Coats/Jackets: wool coat for winter, trench coat, fake leather jacket, blazer. My favorite is fake leather jacket as it can be used in so many different ways: over the cardigan for cold days, over the shirt, dress, causal, elegant, etc. One more item I use as a spring/fall coat: faux suede coat, works perfect for going out over the dress or any other clothing piece, I always get compliment with it and no matter how many times I wash it, it looks like I just bought it! That is a trick to elevate your look without over spending.
Knitwear: Long cardigan, neutral color jumper, turtleneck sweater. Materials: merino wool, cotton, cashmere. Merino wool and cashmere are higher on the price but well worth having for a long time. Cotton is more affordable, long lasting material (if properly taken care of).
Shoes: White sneaker shoes, ankle boots, flats, loafers, high heels.
Workout clothes: yoga pants, shorts, few shirts, you can use old cotton oversize shirt to run in it or just around the house. It is all about comfort.
3.Make room for seasonal clothing!
Take basket or box where you can store seasonal clothes: scarfs, sweaters, winter coats and jackets, summer dresses, sandals, boots, whatever it is, put is aside in the laundry room, maybe garage or a small part of your closet. This checks just another box while you create a minimalistic wardrobe, without sacrificing your style.Summer stuff takes up less space than winter, it is thiner and lighter. Maybe you can keep those garments in your wardrobe year round, depending on how much you have.
4.Create few outfits to see how it fits into your new, minimalistic wardrobe.
When thinking of how to create a minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style, start with basics. It can be wide leg pants and then just use shirt or blouse you like. Add coat or jacket and put on sneaker shoes. There you go! That is my kind of style, but you sure have yours.

5.Color is allowed, and so are few other items!
They say you can only use neutral colors such as white, black, beige, cream, but those are just basic colors. You can and should add some colors that will distinguish you from others. For me it is green or as I said before pink (rose) sometimes. I don’t use them too often but it is nice to refresh your style occasionally. I mean this is how you create a minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style! You might like to add on scarf, poncho during cold days, hat or whatever other pieces you might like.
6.Look at the little things that are important when keeping it organized.
All the little things matter when you create a minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style. For example, you probably didn’t think of your socks. Let’s go through them and get rid of those without the pair so that next time you open your drawer with socks, you will be able to pick the first pair without checking to see if the other sock doesn’t match. Next, check your jewelry box, keep what is worth and what you use, the rest, sell, give away or toss. Underwear, let’s be honest, there is so much of it and you are not using it all, pick what’s used and the rest get rid of.
How to maintain the minimalistic wardrobe?
Did you make your minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing your style?
Congratulations! You either made it or you are looking forwards on doing so. Either way, keep going!
Maintaining it takes practice and practice comes with time. Please remember that repetition is very important when it comes to maintaining your minimalistic wardrobe.
If you want to go for a shopping, make sure you need something before you go to the store. That way you focus on finding those products you actually need. One in, one out, I did it myself and it’s such an amazing feeling when getting rid of something I don’t need while replacing it with new clothing piece, shoes or whatever it is.
Here are few tips when shopping:
- Will I actually wear it or is it just really nice looking?
- What will I wear it with?
- Do I have few, similar looking shirts/pants/blouses, etc. like this?
- Is it necessary?
There is one more strategy saying that you should wait 72h before you buy something. The reason why is because after that time you realize that you either don’t really need it, or it is gone by then (lol)! No, it’s because you create that space between you and the product. That gives you the opportunity to realize the difference between what you want and what you need!
My favorite part about how to create minimalistic wardrobe without sacrificing style is getting rid of all the garments I haven’t worn in a long time. What is your favorite part when creating minimalist wardrobe?
